A white filling, also known as a composite filling, is used primarily to restore decayed teeth, but it can also enhance your smile by reshaping disfigured teeth or changing the color of the teeth. Tooth decay, also known as a cavity, occurs as a result of mouth bacteria that destroy the tooth. The break down of the surrounding tissues of the tooth produce cavities, or holes in teeth. If left untreated, tooth decay can lead to infection, pain, and possible tooth loss. For future reference, dietary changes such as limiting/decreasing acidic and sugary foods/drinks can reduce your risk of developing decay.
Once Dr. Dellinger has completely removed the decay, the composite material of the white filling is applied in layers and hardened with a curing light. Once this process is complete, Dr. Dellinger carefully shapes the composite to properly fit within the tooth. The composite within the tooth is polished to prevent early wear and staining.
A number of reasons have led to a decrease in the use of silver fillings, including concerns about harmful health effects, aesthetics, and upgraded alternatives. Silver fillings contain mercury, which can weaken the tooth structure and even contaminate the environment over time. In terms of aesthetics, silver fillings do not blend with the natural tooth color. An advantage of white fillings is that they bond to the tooth to sustain the remaining tooth structure and insulate the tooth from extreme temperature changes that could lead to breakage.
While white fillings tend to cost more in comparison to silver fillings, keep in mind that Dr. Dellinger’s goal is to recreate your natural smile. A white filling will appear, feel, and function exactly like a natural tooth. If the decay present in your tooth is too large to be resolved with a white filling, we will create a custom fit crown, inlay, or onlay. Dr. Dellinger and his staff are dedicated to helping you keep your natural smile healthy and happy!
